Scorpion

Nails are a socially-defined feminine trait, and many women put in effort and time in maintaining them . But when they come to the resolution to cut them off, it is because of an awakening of a sort -- a realization that long nails are a source of discomfort and a restriction on their mobility.
So the nails form the skeleton of the Scorpion — hard and venomous — representing women's rebirth as a warrior that is ready to grab, scratch, and get on with work or labour.  It is a declaration that they will no longer be haunted by societal expectation of what is beautiful in women, because it is ephemeral and meaningless, like nails detached from fingers.
This piece was made using 120 natural and varnished fingernails collected over several months.

Oriental Mother Empress

Materials: Tampon applicators, glitters, rod, rayon cloth, red ink, black ink

Although discarded prevalently in women’s lives, tampon applicators contribute to the self-care and shedding that forms the halo behind us. We are the originators in this world.
Inspired by the style of Chinese Empress dress that are less lavish, the form of a qipao was used. Shorter and looser for a versatile feel.

Materials: Used-papercups, Muslin, Spray paint, Glitters, Ink

Following my earlier work of Scorpion made from fingernails, I’ve gathered used-paper cups from several school events to put together this piece.
Scorpion represents the carapace of women’s solidarity; for, to succeed in claiming a better state, we must come together in a hard-shelled manner.
